Twenty-Six

Thali looked at the clothes strewn around her room. She wrestled a dress out from under Indi and shoved it back into her trunk. Maybe she shouldn’t wear a dress. When Ana started nesting in a pile of shirts on the floor, Thali shooed her away gently. She cleared off half the bed and directed both animals to sit there so at least she wouldn’t have animal hair all over her clothes.

She didn’t want to tell Mia about today’s meeting, but she would know what Thali should wear. Pursing her lips, she gathered her courage and shouted, “Mia! I need your help!” Cloth rustled and things dropped on the floor in Mia’s room before she finally appeared, a little disheveled, in the doorway. Gingerly sidestepping the rejected clothing, she came and sat on Thali’s bed.

“Playing dress-up with your animals?” Mia asked as she surveyed the room. Bardo poked his head out of the leg hole of some trousers. Ana had sneakily inched closer and closer to another dress and stretched her whole body over it.

“Mia, I’m meeting Garen’s family, and I don’t know what to wear,” Thali grumbled. She fell onto her chair with a sigh, shoulders slumped.

“Oh?” Though Mia sounded surprised, there was only determination and support in her eyes, so Thali gave Mia a weak smile before her best friend asked, “What do you want your dress to say?”

“Say? I don’t know. ‘Don’t hurt me?’” Thali asked, grinning at the ridiculousness of what she was going to do tonight.

“Ha ha. That’s not funny. Garen’s like their leader, right?” Mia asked.

Thali nodded.

“All right. How about that black dress? With your favorite vest,” Mia suggested. Thali pointed to the dress she’d put back into the trunk and Mia nodded. “And …," Mia scanned the room, then picked up a pair of red trousers. “Put these on.”

“They’re a little snug,” Thali said.

“Exactly,” Mia replied.

Thali thought it was strange for her to wear a dress and trousers but didn’t question Mia. She changed quickly, getting Mia to help her with the dress, and then stood in front of her mirror. The dress was a little revealing at the top, but the skirts were full and voluminous. Mia took Thali’s hand and led her back to her own room. Kicking aside all the cloth filling her room, she threw a thick schoolbook on the floor.

“Stand on that. And hold very still,” Mia instructed. Thali did as she was told and froze before the mirror that Mia had somehow squeezed into her room.

“Where did you get the mirror?” Thali asked. It was easily twice, maybe three times, the size of her own, and it would have been expensive.

Mia blushed and said, “Aaron found it for me.” She bent over to fluff out the voluminous skirt, then stood behind Thali with narrowed eyes as she stared at the skirt. Mia opened and closed her scissors as she thought. The clicking sound made Thali nervous. Suddenly, she whirled in front of Thali and started snipping the skirt apart.
